^^Above visualizes my travel itinerary from the US (June 1st) through Europe and Asia (November 21st)… Red = Flights, Orange = Ground Transport, Blue = Ferry. I drove from Florida to California, flew from Boston to London, traveled 19 European countries, flew from Cairo to India, from Singapore to Australia, and Beijing to Miami (Momma, I’m home!!).^^
I want to travel on purpose, with a mission. What is a mission? A specific task or calling assigned to a person. Two examples that come to mind for living missionally are Ethan Hunt’s mission impossible and Jesus Christ’s great commission. I’m applying the concept of accomplishing a mission to travel by having general and specific missions.
My general mission over these next few months is to LEARN. I want to learn about people, culture, a city’s spiritual climate, history, businesses outside the US, universities, and traveling “survival skills”. With this mindset, every action I take and every thought i have become more purposeful. It makes for an exciting day because I begin looking for opportunities to learn. To me, learning implies serving. I learn to teach and teach to learn. My general mission to learn will allow for many opportunities to help, teach, and ultimately love people I contact.
My specific missions…
- visit at least one university in each city
- maintain at least one solid contact in each city
- collect different currencies
- drink a beer in each country
- spend on-average less than $30 a day
- prioritze time with locals over sightseeing
- conscientiously observe business practices internationally
- blog consistently and record things I learn/observe each day
- fellowship with believers in each city
- to become a resource for anyone in need or want
- share the love of Jesus and my testimony with backpackers
- to gain experiences that relate to locals and travelers
- visit the main tourist spot in each city
- to sleep one time overnight in my hammock
- couchsurf at least five times
Although I am traveling with a missional-mindset, I plan to have fun and enjoy! Being missional doesn’t necessarily mean being boring or grim. I don’t see these as exclusive, instead i think someone can both live on mission and enjoy. I think of a quote by John Piper describing the chief end of man, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him”. I love this apparent paradox that accomplishes a mission (God’s desire) and brings us great joy and satisfaction!
